Through the adoption of electronic payment processes, the procurement department is becoming a more active participant in company strategic objectives for reducing costs, enhancing cash forecasting and complying with regulatory mandates.
For years companies have been working to automate invoicing and payments to make the process of paying invoices more efficient. An early business process improvement was document imaging. Companies were able to process more invoices with less manpower, providing lower human resource costs.
Electronic invoicing (e-invoicing) isn’t just about human resource savings anymore though. The next point on the horizon is to automate invoice processing to the point of being able to analyze and consider taking advantage of early pay discounts. It's becoming more important for businesses to be better at controlling the timing of payments, with the goal of capturing early payment discounts when it makes sense.
